Why Volunteer with The GNZ?
The GNZ transforms inner-city communities through education, training, recreation, and recovery—made possible by volunteers like you.
By volunteering, you:
- Empower people seeking a second chance.
- Help create safe spaces for growth.
- Share your skills, compassion, and hope.
“I was lifted by people who believed in me—now it’s my turn to lift others.”
– John Dainwood, Founder

Volunteer Opportunities
GNZ offers meaningful volunteer roles that directly support individuals in recovery, reentry, education, and workforce development. Volunteers play an essential part in strengthening our programs and expanding our impact across InterCitys. Opportunities are available for individuals, groups, students, and community partners.
Education Mentors
Volunteers support adult learners working toward their GED.
Education Mentors assist participants with reading, writing, math, study skills, and test preparation. Volunteers help build confidence, reinforce learning, and provide encouragement as learners work toward academic and career goals.
Ideal for: Retired teachers, college students, tutors, and anyone passionate about adult education.
Vocational Assistants
Help with hands‑on trade training.
Vocational Assistants support participants during introductory training in construction, carpentry, HVAC, automotive basics, computer support, healthcare, and other skill‑based pathways. Volunteers may assist instructors, help set up training areas, or provide one‑on‑one guidance.
Ideal for: Skilled tradespeople, vocational instructors, and individuals with hands‑on experience.
Recreation Leaders
Lead youth activities and community events.
Recreation Leaders help coordinate structured activities that promote teamwork, wellness, and positive social engagement. Volunteers may assist with sports, group outings, workshops, arts activities, or community gatherings.
Ideal for: Youth workers, coaches, activity leaders, and individuals who enjoy community engagement.
Recovery Support Volunteers
Encourage individuals in recovery.
Recovery Support Volunteers provide peer encouragement, help facilitate group activities, assist with resource navigation, and support individuals working toward stability and long‑term recovery. Volunteers do not provide counseling but offer positive reinforcement and accountability.
Ideal for: Individuals with lived experience, peer supporters, and those passionate about recovery work.
Outreach and Events Volunteers
Assist with drives and fundraisers.
Outreach and Events Volunteers help with community outreach, donation drives, awareness campaigns, and GNZ events. Tasks may include setup, registration, distributing materials, coordinating volunteers, or supporting community engagement activities.
Ideal for: Community-minded individuals, event helpers, and volunteers who enjoy fast-paced environments.
