Why We Are Doing It
We are a nation divided on many issues and fronts — We disagree. We fight. We abandon those who need us most...
But we also love, hope, and we dream of a better today; a better tomorrow...
No matter who you are, or what side you are on; what would happen if we utilized our diffences to achieve the impossible?
Do we not – despite our differences – share a single, common, desire for a better life; better circumstances?
But what of those who feel, and think, that we are our own worst enemies and deserve the circumstances we are in?
Yes. Certainly mistakes have been made and this type of endeavor has utterly failed in the past...
but does this mean we should quit trying? Give Up?
Does our mistakes define our future? Does our past circumstances prohibit a change for the better?
We, at The GNZ, do not think so...
We believe in first chances, second chances, we believe in the next opportunity being the one that makes the difference when all others have failed...
We know that, more often than not, people need the help of others to move beyond their mistakes... Ultimately, everyone can do better with a little help from others — from someone who cares...
Where there is no help, the road is long, hard, and often impossible to navigate to a successful destination...
If there are no avenues of support or help available, the mistakes we make are prone to continue and in fact multiply... The hole in which we find ourselves tends to get deeper, with less chance of climbing out of it, as time passes us by.
We, at the GNZ, want to help people out of the holes they find themselves in... We want to help them out of the hole and then help them fill the hole in.
Yet...
On the One hand
The task is huge. The obstacles are virtually insurmountable. The reasons for failing our inner cities are myried.
From a lack of funding; from the callous indifference of those who could help; from our diverse beliefs; from our differences of opinion; from our past failures — the list goes on and on.
Our differences, our dislikes, our divisions? They are deep. Our propensity to distrust, dislike, and sometimes hate, those not situated like us – The Outsiders, if you will – is a strong, relentless, force that often blinds us to reason and the love of one another...
On the Other hand
Despite our differences of social status, racial divisions, political parties and beliefs; despite the unaddressed urgent need and because of our proclivity for the disdain of all others not like us ... the fact of the matter is that, as Americans – in this land of freedom(s) – we have way more in common than our myriad differences...
-
We are all humans and, in this country, we are all recognized as such.
-
We share the same abilities to persevere and to survive, and the same desires to rise above our circumstances.
-
We have the same abilities/capabilities to love and be loved, to hate or not to hate, to render aid or deny support, to get along or choose to attack.
-
We can choose our lifemates and friends without being forced, coerced, or made to accept a marriage, or an arrangement of convenience, based on the profitability and pressures of someone else.
-
We can dream and work to make our dreams a reality.
-
We can embrace religion or spirituality or nature — or nothing at all.
-
We can read whatever we want.
-
We can embrace and practice whatever opportunities we come across or that present themselves.
-
We can write whatever we want.
-
We can disagree about anything under the sun, without punishment, torture, or death.
-
We elect our leaders and do not suffer dictatorships.
-
We can demonstrate, individually or in groups, when we think injustices are occurring.
-
We live under the same laws.
-
We can help those less fortunate, or not.
-
We can choose to make a difference or choose to be indifferent.
